The JRC's Sustainable Resources Directorate carries out research to understand, monitor and anticipate the complex interactions between human activity and the natural environment, in order to support the development and implementation of policies that protect the global environment and ensure that strategic resources (water, land, forests, food, minerals) are managed in a more sustainable manner for the benefit of present and future generations.

Through the analysis of satellite remote sensing data and the application of numerical modelling, the Joint Research Centre (JRC) of the European Commission contributes to an effective and long-lasting marine and coastal stewardship by providing scientific and technical value-added products and information on the European regional seas.

The Water & Marine Resources Unit (JRC) is located at the JRC Ispra site (Italy). The Water & Marine Resources Unit includes 2 Work packages dedicated to the marine research activities:

Monitoring, modeling and assessment of environmental status of marine and coastal waters
