Integration into models of primary production
Another application of satellite derived products is their integration into models of primary production. Net primary production (NPP) by phytoplankton represents roughly half of photosynthetic carbon fixation on Earth, and assessing the associated uncertainties is thus key to carbon cycle studies. JRC has participated to all international exercises of NPP model assessments, the Primary Production Algorithms Round-Robins (PPARR, Campbell et al. 2002, Carr et al. 2006, Friedrichs et al. 2009, Saba et al. 2010, 2011). JRC NPP distributions have been adopted by the SeaAroundUs project, and used for various ecological applications related to fisheries or marine ecosystem studies (Chassot et al. 2007, 2010, Jennings et al 2008, Steenbeek et al. 2013, Reuman et al. 2014).
European Alien Species Information Network
The European Alien Species Information Network (EASIN) aims to facilitate the exploration of existing alien species information in Europe, in order to assist the implementation of European policies on biological invasions.
EASIN is an initiative of the Joint Research Centre of the European Commission, and aims to enable easy access to data and information on Alien Species (AS) in Europe from existing on-line databases to assist policy makers and scientists in their efforts to tackle AS invasions.
