Marine litter is any persistent, manufactured or processed solid material that is discarded, disposed of, or abandoned in the marine and coastal environment. The provisions of MSFD D10 aim to protect the marine environment against harm caused by litter.
Task groups
A task group consisting of experts nominated by EU Member States has been created in 2009 in order to review the technical state-of-the-art and to support the development of the Commission Decision 2010/477/EU.
In-depth assessment
Following the first round of MSFD reporting, the reports delivered by MSFD have been analysed for their technical content. The so-called in-depth assessment has been used in order to identify problematic issues and to plan a way forward.

Technical Group on Marine litter
A technical group on marine litter has been set-up in order to support the implementation of D10 in the MSFD.
