Presentation by Adolf Stips, Diego Macias, Elisa Garcia-Gorriz and Svetla Miladinova from the JRC on the HELCOM Eutrophication Assessment Tool (HEAT) as well as other indicators used for assessing eutrophication (for example TRIX), which depend on variables such as: causal factors (nutrient levels (DIN, DIP)), direct effects (phytoplankton, Secchi Depth (Chla, Kd)) and indirect effects (oxygen, disturbed higher trophic levels). Preliminary examples of applying the HEAT and the TRIX tools to model data generated by the GETM/FABM/ERGOM modeling environment for the Mediterranean and Baltic Sea are provided. These examples demonstrate their potential by clearly detecting the strong eutrophication gradient that is increasing from the open sea to the coast and pointing to certain eutrophication hot spots, as well as giving quantitative temporal trends.
