The Copernicus (ex-GMES) marine monitoring service provides regular and systematic reference information on the state of the physical oceans and European regional seas. The service contributes to maritime safety through provision of data on currents, winds and sea ice that are essential to improve ship routine services, offshore operations and rescue activities.
The service also contributes to water quality monitoring and pollution control, as well the protection and the sustainable management of living marine resources. The pre-operational marine service of Copernicus was currently provided through the EU FP7 project MyOcean2 (ended in Sept. 2014).
